Big block Sno Jet mystery
Update 11/02/08
The Sno Jet has been identified !
Read below
Chad Haag sent in these pics of his Sno Jet in hope that I could help him get an exact ID on the sled. What has been established is that it's a 1969 model..We're just not sure what model in particular.
As you can see , there a 634 Hirth at the heart of this beast. If you go strictly by the brochure , one comes to the conclusion that the sled is a 1969 Sno Jet Model 350.
The more I look at it , the more I think this is a machine that never appeared in any Sno Jet brochure.
RetroSno's very own Joe "Snojetter" Dobies speculates that it's a "Cross Country Jet". Does anyone out there know if any such model ever existed ? My dad didn't start selling Sno jets until 1971 so I'm at a loss.
Don Lawrence e mailed some good input on the matter :
" It must be a one off/prototype. It has a 69 style hood, with '70 front vents. The cut out for the engine is nothing like any of the sleds I have (68-9 or 70) It has a 69 clutch guard and 69 style seat (stripe etc) The seat is like the 70 Gt seat. I think that it is a prototype 70 Gt2, with a 634 Hirth. I will guess that it was built and sent to a dealer for "Testing" "
Is Don correct ??
At this point..I don't know. It certainly appears that the sled is a forerunner to the 1970 GT-2...
Anyone else got any input ???? E mail me !!!
Thanks for the great topic , Chad !!!
11/02/08 Update !
Joe "Snojetter" Dobies enlisted the help of Sno jet historian Jon Hull to get the info on Chad's sled.
" Joe, In 1969 Sno*Jet made the C205 Cross Country Racer. I have heard on them
but have never actually seen one. "
" It would have been the predessor of the GT's which were followed by the
Thunderjets."
Thank You,
Jon
