Don stopped by the shop I work at to show me an old sled he had.  Needless to say I was a bit surprised when I saw this beauty behind his truck!

Here is what Don had to say........

Here's the pictures of the sled I stopped by to show you about a month ago, which was Brian Nelson's 1979  I - 500 sled. As you probably already know Brian was one of Arctic Cat's Factory X-Country Racer's and did the design work on this sled. In 1978 Brian won the I - 500 on one of these sleds and this sled is the one he ran the next year in the 1979 I - 500. Brian had previously won the I - 500 in 1976 on a Liquidator when he was a member of Enduro Team Deere before joining the Arctic Cat X-Country Race Team in 1977.

Here is what Brian has told me about this sled ..............

"In 79 we only went aprox. 50 miles and had a bolt break that held the front arm to the rail. The engine is a 440 bottom end with a 340 kit on top, 50 hp. We ran w/o the belt guard, clutches ran cooler and we left the temp gauge out. During the race we taped the spedo off above 35 mph. Only needed it going thru towns and that eliminated the urge to look down. Also if the water temp went up I wasnt going to stop anyway, it was an all out one shot deal. The machine you have was built for one race, it didnt race again. That one got off easy, !!!"

I bought the sled from Ed Webb in 2006. Ed told me that his wife bought the sled for him from Brian in the mid 1990's.

Thanks,
Don White
